St. George’s Island
Saint George’s Island is off the coast of Jamaica in the West Indies. Originally a Spanish colony founded in the late 16th Century, the island was acquired by the English in 1656. Originally a number of farms and plantations with a small village, by 1670 St. George’s Island was a rich and prosperous port.
The island’s only city of note is the port of St. George. Other than this bustling and active city, there are only a few small Indian villages situated on largely unprofitable inland territory and a few largely abandoned old missions.
Situated on the major trade routes of the day, Saint George is of both strategic and economic importance. In recent years, the port fell on hard times due to mismanagement and mishandling by corrupt governors. In hopes of changing this, the newly crowned English King William III of Orange has appointed a new governor, Sir John Coventry.
